"Sell out"
The scene opens up backstage at the Staples Centre after Bob Cena has just been eliminated from the main event of Anarchy by Zak Shields. We see Bob walk through the curtain and stop, with his head hanging down. His friend Crack, quickly rushes to him, in an attempt to console his heartbroken friend.
"Lets go Zak! Lets go Zak! Lets go Zak!"
Cena listens to the fans in attendence in Los Angeles as each and every one of them rally behind the man that just eliminated him. After a few moments of listening, Cena pushes Crack off of him and begins to walk away from the Gorilla position.
"You're a sellout"
Mentally, Bob is shot. He was already feeling nerves going in to the match but never did he imagine he would be eliminated as early as he was. Before, when Bob lost a match, he was able to shake it off and move on to the next match, but this match was different, for this match Bob gave up everything. His time off with his family, a potential relationship with Nicole, but most importantly, he gave up what made him human. From the moment Vince McMahon lured Bob in to the match, he was a robot, every day was like clockwork, no opportunity to live like he planned. He lost his pride, his dignity....he sold out.
Crack:
"Bob, I know things seem tough now but this will all pass, you will get another shot to win the World Heavyweight Championship".
All Crack's voice was to Cena was background noise, in his mind he was going over his mistakes, everything that went wrong over the last 2 months. He couldnt change what happened, but maybe he could salvage what he gave up to attain success. Cena walked to the OFU locker room, head in hands, with Crack trailing behind him, trying to comfort his friend but to no success. He opened the door and went towards his phone which was on charge by the wall. He had 31 unread messages, most likely messages to cheer him up but none of them would work, none except one. As he was flicking through the messages, he caught a glimpse of her name, Nicole.
"Hey, I was just watching your match, and I know how much you wanted this to work out. I hope you're okay x"
Nicole was a saviour to Bob. Everywhere he went he was mobbed by adoring and sometimes hate fuelled fans, photographers, reporters, people from all walks of life would interrupt his daily life, no matter where he was. But Nicole was different, she never watched wrestling or even listened to rap music, which was perfect for Bob, he could finally be normal around somebody, no more playing this charade. The two started dating around about the time, Bob lost the Intercontinental Championship to Joey The Bastard at Halloween Havoc. When his contract ran out at Wrestlemania, she was there to comfort Bob, she may have not had an interest in what he did but she understood what it meant to him. The two finally had the chance to spend some time together without being interrupted by a show, or a signing, Bob was a free man. Nicole had long, flowing brunette hair with bright blue eyes, which hypnotised Bob every time he looked in to them. Upon seeing the text, a smile crept on to Bob's face, it numbed the pain of defeat. He had to reply, but he didnt know what to say, he wanted to meet back up with her but things had become strained since Bob singed a new contract with ThyWWE and the couple eventually went on a break at the end of May and they hadn't spoke since. Throughout life, Bob had always struggled to balance everything out, whether it was school, working out and socialising, or a relationship, working out and wrestling, he just couldnt give each the same level of dedication. Unfortunately, Nicole took a backseat to wrestling when he put pen to paper on a new deal, but she did understand. Bob put his life towards reaching the top of the professional wrestling industry and this was his moment to achieve his dream. Bob locked his phone without replying and turned to Crack.
Bob Cena:
"I got to take a shower, get on your phone and book a flight back to Belfast for us, I got some business I need to attend to"
With that Bob left the room and Crack did as he was told, no questions asked of his friend. By Tuesday, Bob was walking briskly along Divis street, where Nicole lived, he wanted to talk to her and apologise for making her take a backseat to his career. He was still feeling the effects of the Chamber, once the adrenaline wore off he was a battered mess. It hurt Bob to walk, or to move his right arm, which was previously broken back at Wrestlemania III. It usually feels like this after a big match as opponents tend to target it, knowing it isnt as strong as it used to be. Bob took out his phone and checked the time, 4.39pm, she should be out of work by now. Nicole worked as a teacher at the local primary school, St Peters, she was smart and caring, which was one of the things that attracted Bob. He opened Nicole's text and smiled once again, it was the one thing that has helped him through his defeat at Anarchy. Bob was wearing a grey zipped up hoodie with the OFU logo on the right breast of it and a pair of navy blue jeans. He reached her door, painted green with the number 63 in the middle of the door in gold. He pressed the door bell and waited anxiously. He could hear footsteps on the other side of the door which made his heart beat faster. The door swung open and there she was. Long, flowing hair with her hypnotising blye eyes, just like Bob had remembered. Nicole was wearing a flowery Summer dress that showed off her long legs with a gold necklace around her neck. When she saw Bob standing there she hugged him with a wide smile on her face. Bob was in ecstasy as the couple embraced but he could only muster up one word.
Bob Cena:
"Sorry."
A huge relief had lifted from Bob, he was worried about how she would react to him turning up on her door without notice since Anarchy. She invited Bob in to the kitchen for some coffee and a talk to catch up with each other. As she was making the coffee, Bob spoke up.
Bob Cena:
"I didn't mean to make you feel like I didn't care anymore. It's just...I have worked my entire life to get where I want to be and I lost track of everything. I've changed, I thought I had you no matter what happened to the point where I got complacent and didnt treat you right. I want to fix that, I want you back."
Nicole Moore:
"It's not that easy Robert."
Robert. Bob's full name. He hated being called Robert by everybody when he was growing up, he would correct them, saying that his name was Bob, not even his own parents called him Robert. But something about Nicole calling him Robert gave him butterflies.
Nicole Moore:
"I forgive you but you can't just turn up one day and I will forget everything that happened. You hurt me and I dont want you to do it again."
Bob Cena:
"I promise I wont, I made a mistake, I realise that, I was an idiot for putting my career first."
Nicole Moore:
"I know you love wrestling and I fully support you but you cant let yourself get to that point again. It's not healthy."
Bob Cena:
"I know."
The two sat in Nicole's home for the rest of the day catching up on the latest in each others lives. That night at half 12, Bob walked in to his home where Crack was lying on the black leather sofa sleeping. Crack had left the television on on the channel Dave. Cena walked over to Crack and hit him with a cushion, waking him up in the process.
Bob Cena:
"Wake up! We have a promo to film."
Crack:
"Where the fuck have you been?"
Bob Cena:
"Just catching up with a friend."
Cena kept the identity of his "friend" from Crack like he had done throughout his relationship with Nicole. He didnt want Nicole becoming a person of interest among the press and so kept their relationship a secret to ensure nothing was let slip. Nicole was a private person who kept to herself and Bob felt it would be unfair to let his celebrity status rob it from her. Crack sat up and Cena took a seat beside him.
Crack:
"So, who is she?"
Bob Cena:
"Who?"
Crack:
"Come on, cut the crap, you've been acting weird since Anarchy, you havent talked about the Elimination Chamber once, you're walking around with a smile on your face, even though you were devastated on Sunday. I'm not an idiot, I know something's up."
Bob slouched on the sofa, putting his feet up on the wooden coffee table in front of him. He realised he had to tell Crack, what's the worst that could happen anyway, who would Crack tell?
Bob Cena:
"Alright, I've been seeing this girl for a few months now, and I went over to her house to catch up on things."
Crack:
"Did you get it in?"
Cena looked at Crack for a few moments before changing the subject.
Bob Cena:
"Just get your camera out and film me."
Crack:
"What's her name?"
Bob Cena:
"No questions until the promo is done, get the camera out."
Crack picked up his hoodie which was sprawled on the floor and searched in the right pocket before pulling out his white Iphone 5S. Cena walked over to a blank spot in the living room where there was no posters or furniture. This spot was a designated promo zone in Cena's home.
Crack:
"Who's your opponent?"
Bob Cena:
"Joey The Bastard."
Crack:
"Jesus....Tough going for the first round of the tournament."
Bob Cena:
"Yeah, it may be, but I've beaten Joeey before and I can do it again. Now come on, start filming."
Crack does as Cena says and focuses the camera on to his friend, counting down from 3 before signalling for Bob to start talking.
Bob Cena:
"Joey The Bastard....I have watched your promos going in to Anarchy countless times. I have taken the time to digest every word that you said and I am going to shock everybody that is currently watching this episode of PoTV....But I agree with every single word that Joey The Bastard said. You heard right, two arch rivals, both thinking on the same page. I agreed with everything....Well except for one thing. Except for this little glitch where you mentioned that you were the best wrestler in ThyWWE. It's funny because you're not even the best wrestler in our match on Monday. Joey The Bastard realises that he is no longer at the top of the food chain like he was when he was carrying Beno's bags for him, so he likes to say these things, because that's the only way to save face, that's the only way to avoid becoming exposed as the chump that he is. So he'll show up, and he'll put up a fight and he'll put on a great performance so then he can atleast say that he tried. I see through your claims to be the best and I think you're full of it....And I know that there are a lot of people talking about how I sold out, I sold my beliefs down the river for a shot at my dream and then I failed. You see it as selling out, but I dont see it that way, when I came back in 2012 in a bid to take the ThyWWE World Heavyweight Championship from Alex Kendall, not one of you saw it that way then. So why is it any different now? I was offered the opportunity of a lifetime and I took it, that doesnt make me a bad guy. Now obviously, I havent said the most popular things about the ThyWWE "Universe" as they like to call it, but as you all know, I have never done anything in my life to be popular, I have always done what is best for me.
Cena begins pacing the floor as he talks on about his current gripe, its almost as if he is trying to justify to himself that he sold out for the right reasons.
Bob Cena:
I cashed in for a shot at the Hollywood finish, I cashed in to achieve my dream, and I cashed in to become a winner and I'm not going to have a bunch of losers pay to come see me and then insult me as I put on a show for you people. Joey I want to give you a little bit of advice, and believe this is from a friendly place. I like you, I dig what you do, I enjoy watching what you bring to ThyWWE but there's one thing that really pisses me off about you. You have this weird need to please them. You people can call me a sell out, you can say that I have no self respect for what I did, but Hell Joey, atleast I tell them the truth, atleast I tell them what I really think about them. Their love will get you money Joey, their love will make you a star of this industry but you wanna know what their love cannot and will not get you? The ThyWWE World Heavyweight Championship....These people that surround the ring every single week, they dont respect you, they dont respect me, they dont respect any of us. You go out to the ring every week, you break your back just to try to gain their acceptance and you have them all in the palm of your hand. But when all is said and done, when the dust has settled and the smoke is cleared, when you walk behind that curtain, they forget about you, they're waiting for the next show pony to come along and show them a couple of tricks. You aren't the best in their eyes Joey, all you are is some circus clown, here for their amusement. Me and you are so alike, but I just cant respect you Joey, I want to, believe me you have earned my respect but you have this needy obsession that has forced you to lower yourself to their level. I dont go out the ring to put smiles on people's faces, I go out there because I can, because of my love for this business, and I am not going to have the idiots around ringside throw insults my way because of my passion for my job."
Cena leans against the wall and chuckes to himself before continuing.
Bob Cena:
"The price of a stardom is a lack of privacy. That is because you people, you sad, pathetic people have absolutely nothing going on in your life and so you read your magazines, watch your reality TV shows so you can cast judgement upon another human being, to make yourself feel better about your own life. And Joey, if you can't see what is becoming of you, then it will overcome you and you will be nothing more than their little play thing. And once Vince McMahon rehires Alex Kendall, or tries to get Jonny Freeman back again, or Sheamus, or anybody from his little circle of pals, you will be cast aside like a bad habit. And you will be forced to watch on as I, Bob Cena, take the world by storm."
Cena smirks down the camera as he moves on with his promo.
Bob Cena:
For anybody that does not know who I am, I am the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in the history of professional wrestling......But where has that gotten me? I am no better off than I was this time last year. Maybe they see me as a threat, maybe all they see me as is a cheap Eminem knockoff, but I know that they are afraid. No matter what they think of me, they know what I can do when I really want to make my voice heard. Right about now, I think its time I stop playing around because this Monday I have one of the biggest names in the history of ThyWWE in the opposite corner of the ring. So much of your success in this industry is determined by how well you can take advantage of your opportunities when they come. Sometimes, no matter how desperately you want an opportunity, no matter how ready you are to seize them, no matter how hard you try, the opportunities just dont come. And sometimes when opportunities come, you're just not ready to take advantage of them. Sometimes you just cant bring yourself, mentally or physically, to do anything about them. For me, this Sunday was the latter. An opportunity came and I just stared at it blankly. Its hard enough for a guy like me to make it through the day without being attacked because of the things that I say. And then I come back to wrestle and I hear the fans, the locker room, everybody talking, talking about me, talking about if I am good enough, talking about if I can win the big one again, talking about if I was just a paper champion. The worst ones they stick with me, they camp out and they pipe up every time I fail, every time I lose a match, every time I let an opportunity slip, these voices, they come out again. These voices, they echo throughout my mind, they dominate my thoughts, and I cant think straight. But recently....I feel rejuvenated. I lost this Sunday and I didnt take it as badly as I thought I would, I didn't close off the entire world and punish myself. Instead, I managed to focus my frustrations, mainly because this Monday, another opportunity comes my way. Blade LaVigne wants to prove himself, and challenge the best of the best at Oppression, I'm in, and I'm finally ready to take advantage of it......Who knows, maybe this is a new beginning for me, I'm going to silence the doubters who called me a paper champion. Joey, you would've been a great champion but I'm sorry because on Raw, I gotta win that match. I gotta beat you, I gotta win that championship again."
Cena leans against the wall and slides down it, so he is now lying against it with a blank look on his face, almost as if he has forgotten about the camera.
Bob Cena:
"I gotta win."
Cena continues to lie against the wall in silence, staring blankly at the ceiling, going over the match in his head. Joey is a tough competitor, a man worthy of holding the World Championship no doubt and Bob knows it. His record against Joey is nothing to brag about either, he currently stands at 3-1 but there is one thing that Bob focuses on. That 1 means that he holds a victory over Joey, that 1 means that Joey is not unstoppable, that 1 means that Bob is good enough to take the victory on Monday. Bob smiles as he reminisces about his match with Joey last year at Supremacy. Bob remembers about camera being on and turns to look down it.
Bob Cena:
"Best....in the world."
Cena continues to smile as he lies against the wall as Crack turns off the recording. The past few days has been a mental boost for Bob, coming off of his loss at Anarchy. There was no longer the disappointment on his mind that he was carrying around due to messing up his relationship with Nicole. He could finally think straight, he no longer punished himself for a minor setback, now he spurred himself on. The new confidence in Bob's mind matched the confidence he had used to mask his emotions. He was ready to move on from Anarchy and open a new chapter in the storied career of Bob Cena and what better way to start than with a victory over Joey The Bastard.
