History: The character originated as one of many minions of Ted "Million Dollar Man" DiBiase's "Million Dollar Corporation", when he debuted at Survivor Series 1989. Within one year, the Undertaker took on a new manager in the form of Paul Bearer, and was victorious in his first WWE championship reign against Hulk Hogan. Soon after the heel Undertaker advanced as a mega baby face, and thus became one of the most popular draws in the company. Often facing monstrous opponents like Giant Gonzalez, Vader, and Yokozuna. After his absence following a failed casket match against WWE Champion Yokozuna, the Undertaker returned with new attire and full sleeves of tattoos, and began a thunderous grudge against Ted DiBiase and his corporation, including I.R.S. and Vader... followed shortly by a feud with "Big Daddy Cool" Diesel. In 1996, while feuding with the demented Mankind, Paul Bearer betrayed the Undertaker in the first ever "Boiler Room Brawl"... Undertaker would spend the next year interlocked in a constant battle with Bearer and Mankind, until he would recapture the WWE Championship against Psycho Sid Vicious at Wrestlemania 13.
His reign as champion was cut short when Shawn Michaels botched a chair shot, meant for Taker's opponent Bret Hart, thus causing him to lose the match and his title. The Undertaker punished HBK for his mistakes in the first ever "Hell in a Cell" match... however, as Taker signaled for his finisher, the match would become interrupted by the debut of the Undertaker's long lost brother, Kane. Kane tombstoned the Undertaker upon their first meeting, causing a loss for Taker, and beginning the Undertaker's longest running feuds in his history. Paul Bearer claimed that the Undertaker, as a child, burned down his parent's funeral home, thus killing them and his younger brother Kane in the process... as a result, Bearer took the scorched and vengeful Kane under his wing as the two waged an epic war against the Phenom. The two were engaged in a destructive battle that lasted nearly a full year... the two would compete against one another at Wrestlemania 14, and later on in multiple competitions involving Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Paul Bearer would eventually betray Kane, whom he revealed to be his own son, and returned to the Undertaker's side. Here the Undertaker began his first major heel run in almost a decade. He and Bearer would begin recruiting other WWE superstars to their newly formed "Ministry of Darkness", for which Taker claimed he was building for a "Higher power". The Undertaker would soon target Mr. McMahon and his daughter Stephanie... going as far as abducting her and attempting a unholy wedding ceremony between the two, only to be foiled by Stone Cold. Taker and Shane McMahon would then form the "Corporate Ministry", a proclaimed "merger from hell" as they would wage war against anyone who stood in their way. After a screw job cost Austin his WWE championship, Undertaker gained his third title, and Vince McMahon would reveal himself to be the puppet master behind the Undertaker's supposed "higher power". After losing his championship to Austin and eventually the war with their "First Blood" match at Fully Loaded, the "Corporate Ministry" was disbanded, and Taker took on the Big Show as his new tag team partner, calling themselves the "Unholy Alliance". The two gained a tag team championship run, and often went head to head with X-Pac and Taker's brother Kane.
The character went on hiatus for nearly 9 months after Mark Calaway insisted on rest for his wounds... this was the longest time the character was off screen in 10 years. In spring of 2000, the Undertaker returned with a new physical persona... known by fans as "The American Badass", the Undertaker now sported a long leather jacket, jeans, and a bandanna, and would ride a motorcycle down to the ring as his entrance was set rock music. This version was well received by the "Attitude Era" audience who now preferred more "realistic" gimmicks. The Undertaker would once against feud with stone Cold Steve Austin, and would also engage in battles with Triple H and briefly with newcomer Kurt Angle. After the WCW/ECW Alliance was defeated in 2001, the character would begin yet another heel run. Now with short hair and a shorter temper, the heel Undertaker would cop the phrase "my yard" (referring to the WWE as his territory) and earned himself another WWE championship run after his 11 year rematch with Hulk Hogan in 2002.
Once the Undertaker ended his heel run, the character would soon take on a mentor role for the newcomers on Smackdown, like John Cena, whom he would also engage in a short lived feud with. Upon losing his title chances with Brock Lesnar thanks to Mr. McMahon, taker challenged the chairman to a "Buried Alive Match". Kane would interfere, and bury his brother alive, believing he finally destroyed the Phenom completely. Some months alter, during the Royal Rumble competition, Kane began to see signs of the Undertaker's inevitable return. At Wrestlemania 20, the Undertaker was resurrected in his classic "Dead Man" facade, even being accompanied by his old friend and mentor, Paul Bearer. After defeating Kane at WM20, Taker would feud with foes like Booker T, and eventually Paul Heyman and his Dudley Boys. Heyman would abduct Paul Bearer and use the urn to manipulate the Undertaker to do his bidding. At the Great American Bash in 2004, the Undertaker successfully defeated the Dudley Boys and gained back his urn... however, believing Bearer and the urn were weak links in his structure, the Undertaker buried Paul Bearer in cement.
The Undertaker would gain his fifth run as champion against Batista at Wrestlemania 23, and would soon begin a war with Edge that would culminate in a Wrestlemania battle and championship victory. Shawn Michaels began a campaign to challenge the Undertaker's undefeated streak at Wrestlemania 25, seeing it as his destiny to defeat the dead man. The two went head to head in one of the most well received contests in WM history. The Undertaker walked out victorious, but Michaels demanded a rematch the following year. That night, Michaels put his very career on the line, as the two closed out Wrestlemania 26 with yet another blockbuster match. Taker, once again the victor, retired the Heart Break Kid that night.
Some months later, the Undertaker was put into a "vegetative state" by an unknown culprit. As a result, Kane went on a deadly rampage to find out who caused his brother's affliction. One of his victims was World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio, which gained Kane the title. Kane would then reveal he as the man who turned his brother into a vegetable, and that it was apart of a master plan. The Undertaker returned to challenge him, but was not 100%. Taker would lose to Kane at Night of Champions, and would be betrayed by the resurrected Paul Bearer at Hell in a Cell. Taker's last stand against his evil brother and Paul Bearer ended at Bragging Rights when he was buried alive. Again, he had risen from the grave and had standoffs with the likes of Triple H, and CM Punk, and still he remains undefeated at Wrestlemania.
Wrestling Style: He wasn't known as the purest striker in the business for nothing.
